Travel to Kefalonia

Kefalonia (Cephalonia) is on the western side of Greece in the Ionian Sea, an overnight car ferry ride from Italy.  There are ferry services from Fiscardo, Sami, Argostolion and Poros. In summer, there is sometimes an overnight ferry service between Sami and Ancona in Italy.  Argostolion, (the locals all call it Argostoli) the island’s capital, has an international airport that is well served by airlines throughout Europe. There are daily flights between the island and Athens in summer and a less certain schedule in winter.

Kefalonia has numerous daily car ferry connections with the nearby Greek islands of Lefkada, Ithaca and Zakynthos and with Patras and Igoumenitsas on the mainland. Major car hire companies are present on the island including Hertz, Eurocar and Avis. There are also numerous local car hire companies that offer good service and competitive rates. Some visitors use a tour company to organise every facet of the journey from flight bookings to accommodation and car hire.  Company representatives meet guests at the airport or ferry port and are there to help with any problems.  More and more though, visitors choose to make their own arrangements, which is now very easy to do via the Internet and phone.
